Destroying a NVA
Logistic ship, 1974

Captain Mai Van Tan

In June 1974, Marine Brigade 258 Headquarters was stationed at the Hoi Yen intersection (Hai Lang, Quang Tri province).
At 6.00 am, Battery B of the 1st Marine Artillery Battalion reported a strange ship which had been sailing from Cua Viet to Huong Dien. The Brigade Headquarters radioed the VN Navy which confirmed that there had been no VN Navy ship in the region on that day. The appearance of that ship was reported to the Marine Division Headquarters. The Major General, Commandant of Marine Division Headquarters flew in a helicopter to make an observation. The ship was ordered to land at My Thuy port (Quang Tri). It did not obey and continuously fired machine guns at our units at My Thuy. The Brigade 258 Headquarters ordered M48 tanks to fire 90mm cannons, directly at the ship when it had been passing by My Thuy at 9.57 am. That NVA ship sank. It belonged to the NVA Naval Regiment 5, and had serial number T174.
Frogmen of Marine Corps were ordered to search it. They reported the ship had been loaded with ammunitions, dried cooked rice, canned pork made by Red China - All NVA sailors had been killed.
